A particular area of specialization of Dr. Meek is working with individuals regarding sexuality and gender concerns. This area of interest and experience extends to same sex couples and families in which a member or members may identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or may be questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity.  Please scroll down this page to find information for regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, transgender clients, gay youth and their families, and Dr. Meek's statement repudiating reparative therapy.

Information for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Questioning Clients

The spectrum of human sexualities covers a continuum of identities, orientations, preferences, and behaviors that range from exclusively heterosexual to exclusively non-heterosexual.  Individuals who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or who may question their sexual orientation may face a variety of unique personal, social, and familial issues.  Among these issues are...

  • Coming out to self and others

  • Understanding sexual identity

  • Dating and compatibility

  • Partnering and commitment issues

  • Monogamy and negotiating sexual behavior

  • Personal safety and well-being

  • Family relationships

  • Coping with social stereotypes and other forms of marginalization

In counseling, I address these and other issues in a supportive and affirming manner that takes into account those social factors that gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals experience on a daily basis.

Information for Transgender Clients

Like sexuality, outward expressions of gender and gender identity are variable and individualized.  Counseling for clients who may be questioning their gender identify or feel a discrepancy between their biological sex and their personal sense of self is characterized by a open, caring, and affirmative stance.  To this end, I offer supportive counseling services to clients who identify as transgender or who are struggling with gender identity issues, including appropriate referrals for medical services and associated documentation.

Information for Gay/Bi/Trans Youth & Their Families

While we know that being embedded in a family system can serve as a positive factor for youth who are beginning to understand themselves as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, the adjustment and coping issues that such a disclosure may present to parents and other family members can make positive family relational processes difficult to achieve and maintain.  The following are some of the issues that might be addressed in counseling:

  • Understanding sexual orientations and gender identities

  • Adjustment issues and concerns

  • Religious beliefs and spirituality

  • Coming out processes for youth, parents, and other family members

  • Maintaining supportive relationships during periods of stress

  • Negotiating communication

  • Sex education and sexual safety

  • Coping with social marginalization

Counseling for these and related issues may be conducted with youth and their family members through individual, couples, and/or family sessions.

Goals of counseling for gay/bi/trans youth and their families may include increasing awareness regarding non-heterosexual sexualities, restructuring and resolving issues related to communication, boundaries, and roles, creating or revitalizing family cohesion and parenting strategies.  Changing an individual's sexual orientation would not be a goal of affirmative counseling with these families.

Gay/bi/trans youth and their families are encouraged to contact me for more information about this area of specialty and the types of counseling services that are available to address family and individual needs.

Statement regarding reparative therapy.

I, Gregory S. Meek, PhD. LMHC,  in no way practice or endorse so called reparative, conversion, or any other type of therapeutic approach which seeks to change or modify one's sexual orientation or gender identity. As the statements here indicate, my perspective on these issues is one of honoring the uniqueness of each individual client's experience of themselves and in their relationships with others.  The goals of counseling related to sexuality and gender issues are not oriented toward repair or conversion of those inclinations and orientations that feel natural for us, but are oriented toward discovery and exploration of a sense of self that feels authentic and genuine.
